ScotEduBlogs Wiki:Site support

From ScotEduBlogs Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

At the moment, the ScotEduBlogs.org.uk site is being hosted by Robert Jones. Long term, we will need to come up with some funding to set up more robust hosting. The cost of this would not be astronomical - something in the region of £30 per month should be enough.

Any philanthropists out there?--Jonesieboy 18:58, 16 February 2007 (GMT)

SQA and LTS Sponsor ScotEduBlogs Server

After TeachMeet07 at the Scottish learning Festival. The SQA and LTS jointly offered to sponsor ScotEduBlogs for a year. We have moved SEB to its own server. John 17:32, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

What sort of numbers are you talking about? It's all run off a database isn't it? So presumably the main thing is bandwidth rather than server space. I would have thought purplecloud would be able to provide a service for less than £30/month. Stuartmeldrum 08:53, 23 May 2007 (BST)

I'm returning for a far away land with the news that I might have mentioned but can't remember - me and my friends run a server of our own at http://www.ilovethenet.co.uk. But instead of going for an account, it's probably better renting a VPS - Virtual Private Server - to have full "root" access to an operating system.

This is more complex but it means being able to customise the web server fully as well as easily cope with Ruby on Rails, cron jobs etc.

The company we use is knownhost.com which has been ultra-reliable and cheap. About £11 a month for a basic server. Maybe it would help to make a list of necessary tools for the project?
